H. D. Woodson High School holds the distinction of being the first newly constructed high school in the District in nearly 40 years.

SETTY services include MEP/FP design for the new 320,000 GSF school building, which includes an underground parking deck, science laboratories, a music room, a gym, an indoor pool and computer and server rooms. Our design employed several modern energy-saving features.

Pool dehumidification units were used to condition the large open natatorium space. In order to reduce the load on the pool's water heaters, waste heat from coils of the dehumidification units were hydronically transferred to the pool water with help of a heat exchanger.

To reduce the mechanical refrigeration requirements of the space, an airside economizer cycle was used to condition the space under specific ambient conditions. High-efficiency chillers and condensing hot water boilers were used to further improve the energy savings.

In the state-of-the-art auditorium, acoustic clouds for sound baffling were suspended from the ceiling, thereby requiring all ductwork to be resized in order to accommodate the acoustic cloud truss system.

Furthermore, all ductwork and major piping was computer-modeled and checked for clash detection before field installation, allowing for a relatively smoother construction process.

All dedicated outside air units were designed with integrated energy recovery wheels and a building automation system controls for all of the building's equipment.
