The Naval Air Station Patuxent River is home to Headquarters, Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, the Atlantic Test Range, Patuxent River Naval Air Museum, and serves as a center for test and evaluation and systems acquisition relating to naval aviation. The station also operates a small outlying field, NOLF Webster.

The Atlantic Test Range facility supports aircraft flight test range operations, including telemetry data collection, processing, and post-flight analysis for aircraft test programs, including long-duration unmanned air vehicles.

A project added a two-story extension to the northeast corner of Building 2118 at the Naval Air Station, complete with an elevator. This extension features operations rooms, conference and meeting spaces, open office space, private offices, and support areas. The addition contains independent mechanical, electrical, plumbing, computer data, telephone, and fire protection systems separate from those in the existing building.

To connect the new addition to Building 2118, Corridor 107 was extended, requiring limited demolition. Offices 111 and 112 will be modified, and a portion of the exterior wall in Building 2118 was demolished to connect Corridor 107 to the reception area of the new addition. Windows in Offices 111, 112, and 133 were removed and the openings were filled.

The facility meets all Anti-Terrorism Force Protection standoff and design criteria as outlined in the latest edition of UFC 4-010-01. The second floor of the addition houses a Mission Control/Test Cells, constructed to meet SAPF requirements.
