BAS Upgrade & Digital Twin Pilot

In response to the COVID pandemic in 2020, the DC Department of General Services, with a $24 million dollar budget, following the recommendation of SETTY, undertook a thorough assessment and retrofitting of existing systems in 117 public-school buildings in order to guarantee the highest possible air quality for students, faculty, and visitors.

The project quickly matured into a getting the BAS systems of DGS centralized through a Supervisory Control System.  From here, Skyspark was initiated to capture faults and write rules for over 20,000,000 sf of schools. This program in conjunction with DGS’ dept of sustainability and environment established a standardized graphical interface.

This large scale supervisory BMS implementation was then converted to a digital twin pilot.  The goal of the pilot was to ensure seamless information transfer across platforms, facilitate fault resolution directly within the work order system, and, most importantly, prepare the district with a digital twin software framework to support future integrations.

The implemented a Delta Controls enteliWEB facility and energy management system for each school to monitor and control the main HVAC equipment from a remote network operations center. The enteliWEB system included a user-friendly dashboard that provided real-time data on indoor air quality, temperature, humidity, and energy usage. The system also provided remote alerts and notifications to enable quick response to any issues or malfunctions in the HVAC equipment.

DC DGS’ conducted a Facility Condition Assessment, the data from the assessment was integrated into the Digital Twin. SETTY integrated data from IoT sensors, including PM 2.5 particulate levels, CO2 levels, and VOCs, to monitor air quality in real time in Syyclops. This integration allowed facilities management teams to track indoor conditions and make adjustments quickly to improve air quality.  The following are snapshots of Dunbar, a 300,000 sf High School.
